If you had no fear, what would you do?
It’s a great question, but I think we’re asking it wrong.
Most of us are struck immobile with fear every now and then. While our fear might be something small to someone else, it matters not. If it stops us pushing through, then the fear has won. The frightening thought of taking action has filled our brain with cortisol and it’s struck us down.
As long as we let our fear rule our thoughts it’s won. And it diminishes us.
We show up as less than we could be. We shy away from doing. And in the process we become less able in the ‘being’ stakes.
Our being, our wonderful brightness loses its ability to shine up. So in our nature of being ‘us’, we become less able to show ourselves at our best.
So perhaps the question should be
“if you had no fear, who would you be?”
I often ask this during school presentations on exam stress and fear. The answers are often surprising.
Even now, if you ask yourself the question, you’d probably say you’d feel nothing was impossible. And the ramifications of feeling invincible are awesome!
When fear loses its power, we are indeed unleashed. What’s to stop you being amazing if your truly feel nothing stands in your way.
And I’m not limiting my freedom from fear to just the practical side of things. We can all feel more powerful and able with perhaps more time, more money, more love, more influence etc.
I’d also like us to ditch the fear of ‘making it’. Whatever that means for each of us,
In my small contribution, I am continually trying to release fear of moving towards my vision of sharing Mindfulness with places of learning.
Having spent over 12 years now in an HMP establishment I know what’s it like to feel diminished and fearful.
Making it for me means feeling supported by the Great Spirit in my endeavours to move forward. I feel inspired to tell my story, and (usually) in these moments, my sense of knowing tells that all will be well. My faith puts fear in its place.
So I know what it’s like to ditch the fear and step out. I feel that reaching out to others is a done deal or a ‘slam dunk’. Releasing the fear is a great leveller.
In its place I’ve sensed an inevitability about life. That by showing up ready to serve, I move towards new connections.
What fear would you like to drop? How would it feel to life a life without fear?
