The Potency of Knowing your Power

We’re all potent to some degree, but the word itself conjures up a high degree of power that some of us may shy away from.

I was talking to a dear friend recently who’s always claimed her own power.  She’s a confident businesswoman, educator, mother and friend. Everything about her exudes strength of mind, an articulate personality and strong allure.  She’s magnetic and knows it.

She has no trouble in recognising her Potency.  It’s a word few of us use to describe ourselves.

Google shows that Potency is:

the power of something to influence or make an impression

So, when we claim our potency, when we know that we embody it, we also know we have the ability to affect how others behave around us, how they perceive us, and how we can make a difference.

If I was to ask you how you think of yourself, would feeling Potent figure? And yet does any aspect of this description connect with you?  I expect it does.

As employees, family members and friends, we all know we can change others’ opinions.  We know we can sway people’s decisions. There’s something accepted in this – we have influence through our reputation, our conversations, our knowledge.

Bullies can influence others with various forms of personal pressure.

But I wouldn’t use the term Potency in these mixes.

To me, potency has an air or sexuality about it. It’s almost an alchemy of biology and physiology. It’s a combination of heightened awareness and a knowing.

When my friend spoke of her Potency, I felt she was in some way drawing on the knowledge of ages past, on the sages and wise men. I felt a hint of ancient medicine healers, gathering herbs to heal ailments.

To me, Potent = a power for good. I wrap it up with Medicine in its power to heal. I apply it to Spiritual Leaders who channel a force for good.

Whilst the work itself leaves me feel somewhat inadequate, I recognise other souls who I feel have this quality. And there are the spiritual leaders and healers working in the light as a power for good.  The Light Bearers whose allure draws the student to learn. They are the leaders who can explain the mystical and make it commonly understood.

My friend wasn’t shying away from her acknowledged power, and as an Educationalist she was influencing others for good. Her power shone out. She had the ability to raise the vibrations of those around her. I count myself fortunate to be a friend For I have much to learn from her.

I find the idea of being Potent myself somewhat overwhelming as I see it carries much responsibility and is a power to use wisely. But it does remind me to step into my own Power. I’m more comfortable with that. I can claim my Power by making good choices for myself and those I work with, and work for. I can use this self-claimed Power to sharing positive thinking amongst my friends and family.

Don’t be shy about claiming your own Power. It’s your birth right. When you claim your Power, you may feel you have a voice, or a platform to speak out – on whatever touches your soul. Claiming your Power may make you feel strong and protected.

When I walk into HMP I usually have a pink quartz heart in my pocket, and I shine out love from its centre towards those around me.

It’s always used for good.

Power was never meant to be used at the expense of any other living soul.

If you’re ready to claim your Power, step into the strength that it gives you to change how you see yourself and those around you.

And reflect on what Potency might mean for you? Does it sit well in your heart and soul? Could you develop your own level of potency?

My friend moves through her life with an inevitability that life will turn out fine. She ‘knows’ all will be well and expects it. She is expectant that life with bring her what she needs.

And in watching that unfold around her, she’s taught me to nurture my own power to direct my destiny.

How about you? What does Potency say to you?
